YOUR LIFE IS NOW
John Mellencamp
Director: Samuel Bayer
"Your Life is Now" will be a down and dirty, gritty video -- raw and beautiful. The glue that
holds this film together is John's performance photographed using antique and rare cameras and
lenses. Combined, these elements will make a visually arresting piece of film.
We will film the video in and around John's hometown, using locations that he picks. Any other
cast members or background people will be his choice (it might be nice to slightly imitate the
portrait work done for John's album cover artwork and include people in the background of the
video, never explaining who they are or why they are there.)
The in camera and organic approach we take to the video will include these examples:
Throughout the clip, we constantly let objects fall in and out of delicate focus, hands, objects,
etc. John's face is shot in extremely close focus -- the camera tracks over faces, skin. These
images are shot at such close proximity that at times throughout the clip, these vignettes will
become disorienting and weird -- it is as if we were looking at alien landscapes.
We will use a variety of antique cameras and lenses, shooting through yellow and faded optical
glass. Using hand cranked cameras will give this video a strange and dreamlike beautiful
photographic quality without ever becoming nostalgic or feeling like purposely aged film --
everything is shot handheld.
We will use different and strange film stocks and developing techniques, letting the edges of the
film become naturally discolored by dipping the film in weird chemicals. There will be burns,
abrasions, etc.
How little or how much John performs is his choice. The process of locating and using places in
his hometown will help add another element to make a great spot.
