LEAVING ON A JET PLANE
Chantal Kreviazuk
Director: Jim Gable
CONCEPT
This video would be a personality piece of Chantal. We would create a stylized dubbing stage
for her to perform in. The lighting would be a subdued top light from a bank of fluorescents that
would illuminate her work area. She is sitting at a piano for the beginning. Everything is
luscious and "glowy" due to camera filters and the film to tape transfer. The mic stands and
piano hardware all have glistens and hits from the various small lights scattered around.
On a giant wall-sized screen are scenes from the film "Armageddon" being projected -- work
print complete with timecode -- that is being reflected in every shiny surface, from the piano to
the glass walls of the vocal booth. (We would actually project images from the film to create
this.) There would be a pre-edited story from the film that we would have pre-edited before the
shoot.
Chantal will be both performing the song at the piano and overdubbing the vocal parts in the
booth. Her style will be super-natural. Sometimes getting into the song and performing the shit
out of it -- other times singing it as if to herself.
We will film some behind-the-scenes footage of her just watching the film, working with an
engineer in the control room, and making notations on paper while the film runs. We will get the
feeling of her working with the film, collaborating on making the feeling of the song right, using
inspiration to guide her in her performance.
The look of our footage will be beautiful and glossy. We will design our look to blend with the
film's look editorially so that it will seem natural.
