MARC ANTHONY
Title: "I Need To Know"
Concept by Paula Walker
The inspiration for this video is Marc Anthony's coolest performance ever. The
entire video is crafted to emphasize him as a multi-level performer, artist and
personality. To achieve this, we find Marc as the leader of an underground scene
filled with all types of characters from New York. A hip, glamorous, recreation
of a Bob Fosse kind of dream world: hot, sexy, grinding, dangerous and blatantly
theatrical. Totally stripped down, it's modern with an edgy sensuality. Films
are the big inspiration here. Marc should look and feel like a movie star and
the video should have the feeling of a mini movie. Using a loosely framed,
threaded story line will create this type of cinematic feeling.
The hottest night eve. Every air conditioner is broken. As Marc makes his way
through the adoring crowd, we see frozen, still-framed images of him. This is a
sort of homecoming for him. The music has already begun and a couple of the
dancers are going through their paces. A horn section is warming everybody up.
confident and full of charisma, Marc takes over the stage. He begins singing
coolly, directing all of his energy toward the crowd, but overcome by her
presence, he is drawn to the lead show girl in front (it might be interesting to
cast a celebrity performer). Old wounds, ancient emotions emanate from their
undeniable attraction. Her eyes follow his every move. The crowd immediately
senses this connection and everyone's attention focuses on what could happen.
Close-ups on their eyes and body movements transmit their unspoken feelings.
The duel begins. The girl walks away challenging Marc. In a display of bravado,
he climbs off the stage, pulling her back with him. The crowd reacts wildly.
With his captivating performance he leads her further and further in. In
response, she uses her own weapon - her body - and begins doing her best hottest
moves. The emotion and unmistakable tension explodes. Pressure builds as the
crowd "wants to know". This will be shown by quick cut-aways of exchanges
between other couples: a woman slaps a man, another gives a subtle come on, etc.
Pulling back into Marc's performance we become even more entranced by his heart
felt singing and conviction. Only through his song is he able to communicate his
feelings. . . Flashing back to another time and place in the past, we learn of
the history of this couple. . . The dressing room. A random spontaneous
Cassavettes kind of dialogue takes place between the two of then. Moving inside
this tense, intimate moment, their dialogue (improvised/ scripted) is mixed into
the music. Please note: this dialogue section will be experimental in scope and
will be developed with Marc. I would like to explore various ways of making this
section work. For example, we could use subtitles, type, etc. . . We will
design this section will be very limited, not intended to overpower the music.
If it doesn't work, we won't use it.
Cutting back into Marc's present performance footage, the background becomes
abstracted as we move closer and closer into Marc's face for an instant close-up.
Desire, emotion and frustration consume his gaze as she looks back at him.
Cutting back and forth between the two of them, emotional intensity overwhelms
him. Forced to act, he finally pulls her off the stage.
This next section will be filmed in a visceral, documentary style. Marc sings to
her as they rush backstage through throngs of people. Everyone in the theater
scrambles after him as he continues the performance. It's all a wild rush, a
blur of motion. Adrenaline and emotion combined. Out the back door, through a
courtyard, and into the alley. The location has the gritty flavor of New York.
Surrounded by old theater signage, lights, and a clear view of the city below
they meet, face to face.
One on one. Marc's singing intensifies - the crowd eggs them on enjoying the
exchange. Marc moves in closer, as we circle around him. Desire fills the air.
The video opens up into a sexy, raucous kind of duel. the crowd dances wildly in
a line up behind them (we'll use handheld cameras and stop frame technique to
capture the effect). We move closer and closer into Marc's face as he sings "I
Need To Know" to her. He watches her reluctantly turn around and walk away (all
from Marc's POV). . . somehow knowing this is only the beginning. The adoring
crowd closes in and dances around him.
The overall look of the video will be beautiful and luscious. The colors will
have a monochromatic richness. . . saturated, but not overly bright or high-key.
The look is glamorous, with a modern edge.
